About Us

Canadian collaborators unite to build AMR awareness and share leading resources.

Our Canada-wide campaign aims to build awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), highlight severe and widespread impacts, and share ways we can all help. Over 50 committed leaders working in health care, research and education, non-profits, and public health programs have gathered with coordination from the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID) to tackle AMR. Our unified response addresses the critical need for Canadians to learn more about one of today’s most pressing health crises.

NCCID has a long history of bringing the right organizations and experts together to develop collaborative responses for AMR and other infectious disease issues affecting public health. We are one of six National Collaborating Centres for Public Health funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada; our centre is hosted by the University of Manitoba. Global Lens, Canadian Focus

Ours is one of many campaigns marking World AMR Awareness Week.  Each year, from November 18 to 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global institutions for animal health, food and agriculture, and the environment join in leading the global campaign.

The global campaign takes a ‘One Health’ approach, recognizing that our health is closely connected to the health of animals, plants, and the environment. Solutions to antimicrobial misuse and resistance are rooted in these connections and rely on joint action by all sectors and nations. According to the WHO, “AMR affects countries in all regions and at all income levels,” though poverty and inequality contribute to the problem.1

This Canadian collaboration supports the global campaign but focuses on Canada. Human health is given priority while building an understanding of the wider issues and connections. We highlight educational resources and tools developed by leading Canadian programs and institutions. By working together, we hope to better coordinate regional and local awareness-building efforts led by different organizations.

Acknowledging Partners

Together, we amplify positive messages that promote good prescribing practices, patient safety, and public health.

Many partners contribute to this campaign. They bring expertise in health service delivery, public health, research, policy development, patient advocacy, and communications. Convened by NCCID, partners meet regularly to offer perspectives on AMR from different regions and areas of focus, share knowledge from some of Canada’s leading antimicrobial stewardship programs and campaigns, and contribute to a set of evidence-based resources and webinars featured on this website.

Truth and Reconciliation

NCCID and partners are committed to working towards truth and reconciliation.

NCCID is hosted at the University of Manitoba, located on the ancestral lands of the Anishnabeeg, Anishniniwak, Dakota Oyate, Denesuline and Nehethowak/Inninwak Nations. It is also in the heart of the homeland of the Métis Nation.

NCCID and partners acknowledge, with gratitude, the lands and their original caretakers, striving to honour them in this collaborative campaign. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility to improve relationships between nations and to improve our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.
